The Specifics

When naturalizing immigrants become American citizens, they learn the history and the civic scripture of our nation. They learn the principles that give spirit and heart to our democracy. We ask immigrants to study this background so they understand what it means to be a citizen, and we ask them to take an oath so they commit to the values that come with US citizenship.

What would it look like if we all committed to US citizenship in this way? How could we all declare our commitment to this country, and become sworn-again Americans?

We’re asking individuals, groups and organizations to reconsider what it means to be American, and then, in ceremonies at dinner tables, block parties or town squares, with five or five thousand, take the oath to become a Sworn-Again American. You can download tools and templates for inspiration, but we want you to tell us how you’d use $500 to host your own, unique Sworn-Again America ceremony! Project details and resources at

We’re looking for fun, creative ideas that bring people together to talk about citizenship and take the oath to become Sworn-Again, anything from a gathering of best friends to a neighborly pot-luck to a city-wide citizen flash mob!

Submit an idea from September 10, 2012 to October 12, 2012 (noon Pacific Time). Our judges will select which applicants will pass to the voting round. From October 15, 2012 to October 25, 2012, we’ll open it up to public voting. Rally your colleagues and friends to get behind your effort and join the public in selecting the winner.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and vote, but please do some research on Break Away (even if you don't vote for them) and what they will offer for our communities nation-wide. We are all working toward the same goal of becoming the perfect citizen, so we must climb on each other's shoulders to meet the giants of communities world-wide.
